What Is FECO, and Why Should You Care?

FECO stands for Full Extract Cannabis Oil. Think of it as a syrupy, potent extract that captures the entire spectrum of cannabinoids and plant goodness – not just THC or CBD. We're talking about terpenes, flavonoids, and all the beautiful compounds that contribute to cannabis’s entourage effect.

For me, it’s been a game-changer. As someone who deals with chronic pain and insomnia, having a reliable, natural remedy at home is priceless. A single drop of FECO helps me sleep soundly, and it’s become my go-to over pills or processed edibles.

You can also fill capsules with it using an oral syringe – a super discreet and measured way to microdose. Or stir it into tea. Or fold it into butter. It’s versatile like that.

As Megan Rapinoe shared:

“CBD has become part of my all-natural recovery system... Instead of taking Advil or other pain management meds, I’ve almost exclusively substituted with CBD products.”

While she highlights CBD, FECO preserves the full magic of the plant. I couldn’t agree more—nature’s blend beats synthetic shortcuts every time.

Step 1: Decarboxylation — The Essential First Move

Raw cannabis doesn’t contain active THC or CBD. It holds THCA and CBDA, which need heat to transform into the cannabinoids we know and love. This process is called decarboxylation, or decarb for short.

Why Decarb Matters:

Without decarbing, your cannabis-infused oil will be weak at best and inactive at worst. So let’s get it right.

My Go-To Method

Instead of wrangling oven temps and foil, I now rely on a decarboxylator that handles the process at the touch of a button. It gives me peace of mind, and it keeps the smell low—which is great when I don’t want my whole kitchen smelling like a dispensary.

Here’s what I love about it:

  • Even heating so I don’t burn my flower

  • Odour control with a silicone lid

  • Works for both THC (30 mins) and CBD (60 mins) decarbs

  • Also works for infusion (4 hours)

Whether you’re prepping for a FECO tincture or cannabutter, a consistent decarb is essential. I highly recommend using a tool that’s designed for this, like the one I use from ECRU. No stress, no mess—just push the button and go.

Step 2: QWET — Quick Wash Ethanol Technique

Now for the fun part—extracting that goodness with a process called QWET (Quick Wash Ethanol).

This is how you make FECO:You soak the cannabis in food-grade ethanol that’s been chilled (and I mean frozen) to reduce chlorophyll extraction. Then you filter and evaporate the alcohol off, and voilà—you’re left with a potent, clean concentrate.

What You’ll Need:

  • A mason jar

  • Food-grade ethanol (look for 95%+ grain alcohol)

  • A steel strainer or funnel

  • Coffee filters

  • A pan or glass dish

  • A portable burner or induction stove

The QWET Method:

  1. Freeze both your decarbed cannabis and ethanol overnight.

  2. Combine them in the jar and shake gently for 2–3 minutes.

  3. Filter through your strainer and coffee filters.

  4. Optional: Repeat the soak once more for extra yield.

  5. Carefully evaporate the alcohol by placing your dish in a hot water bath (not directly over heat!).

You’ll be left with a dark amber oil, slightly sticky, packed with cannabinoids. It’s thick, strong, and can be stored in a syringe or glass vial.

⚠️ Safety Tip:

Ethanol is flammable. Never place the mixture directly on a stovetop or open flame. Use hot water baths only, and ventilate the area well.

What to Do with Your Homemade FECO

You’ve made your own FECO—amazing! Now what?

You can:

  • Fill capsules for bedtime use

  • Mix into coconut oil, honey, or glycerin for tinctures

  • Fold into cannabutter or cannaoil

  • Stir into warm tea, smoothies, or even soup (avoid direct heat)

It’s virtually flavourless, unlike green dragon or raw tinctures, and easy to dose. A little goes a long way.

Final Thoughts: FECO Is Your Friend

FECO might sound intimidating, but once you try it, you’ll see why so many in the cannabis community swear by it.

✅ It’s full-spectrum✅ Easy to microdose✅ Great for pain relief, sleep, and inflammation✅ Customizable to your needs

Sure, it takes a few steps. But the result? A potent, versatile cannabis oil that you made yourself—and that’s something to feel proud of.

Christina & Stefan

In the world of herbs and flavors, we’re a chef and an engineer couple who combined our skills to explore the technical side of cannabis cooking. What started as a love for home-style edibles became a mission to simplify the process behind them. From decarboxylation to infusion, we’ve studied, tested, and even built the tools we use — including our own écru decarboxylator. We aim to make difficult concepts simple, not only in the machines we’ve created but also in how we explain these processes. Our goal is to bring these simple concepts into your home, making it easy to create, and ultimately, bring joy to your kitchen.
