Why Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil isn’t just a trendy superfood. It’s a smart choice for infusions because of its high fat content, which allows it to bind with cannabinoids like THC and CBD more efficiently. It also boasts natural antimicrobial properties, supports fat burning, and is widely used to improve skin and brain health.

Compared to other oils like canola or vegetable oil, refined coconut oil has a more neutral flavour, making it an ideal base for edibles and tinctures. When paired with cannabis, you’re creating a functional food that supports both body and mind.

The Magic of Decarboxylation: What It Is and Why It Matters

Before we get to the recipe, let’s clarify one often-misunderstood step: decarboxylation (or "decarb").

Raw cannabis contains THCA and CBDA — the precursor forms of THC and CBD. To feel the full psychoactive or therapeutic effects, these compounds need to be activated through heat, turning THCA into THC, and CBDA into CBD. That’s decarboxylation in a nutshell.

“Decarboxylation is the bridge between plant and potency,” says cannabis educator Emma Chasen. And we couldn’t agree more.

Without it, your infused oil might taste earthy — but it won’t do much.

Recipe: Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil

This recipe is great for beginners and yields enough for several servings. Prep time is short, and most of the time is passive infusion. Ready?

✿ Ingredients:

  • 1 gram of cannabis flower (strain is up to you — I recommend a fruity, sweet strain like Blue Dream or Mimosa)

  • 1/2 cup refined coconut oil (or sub with MCT, grapeseed, or olive oil if preferred)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Grind and Load

Break up your cannabis flower by hand or with a grinder (don’t pulverize — just a coarse grind). Place the herb evenly into the canister of the ECRU Decarboxylator and secure it with the silicone lid.

2. Decarb Like a Pro

Turn on the ECRU Decarboxylator.Set it to 245°F and decarb for:

  • 30 minutes for THC-rich flower

  • 1 hour for CBD-heavy strains

This process activates your cannabis and preps it for infusion.

3. Infuse the Oil

Once decarbed, add your 1/2 cup of coconut oil directly into the same canister with the herb. Stir gently and set the machine to infuse for 4 hours. The ECRU Decarboxylator will take care of the temperature and timing.

Compatible infusion bases:

  • Coconut oil

  • Butter (2 sticks = 1 cup)

  • Glycerin

  • Honey

4. Strain and Store

After the infusion is complete, set a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth over a bowl. Pour the warm mixture through to catch plant matter. Use the back of a spoon to extract as much oil as possible.

Transfer your infused oil into a clean glass jar with a lid.📦 Storage Tip: Keep refrigerated for up to 1 month.

Dosing Guide (Start Low, Go Slow)

The strength of your oil depends on the strain, potency, and quantity used. If you used 1 gram of cannabis at ~20% THC, you’re looking at about 200 mg of THC total in the oil.

That’s about:

  • 20 mg per tablespoon

  • 5 mg per teaspoon

Start with ¼ to ½ teaspoon when cooking or drizzling. You can always add more — but you can’t un-eat an edible!

Versatile Ways to Use Cannabis Coconut Oil

Your new infused oil is more than just a novelty — it’s the foundation of dozens of edible recipes. Try it in:

  • Stir-fries

  • Salad dressings

  • Smoothies

  • Baked goods (brownies, cookies, muffins)

  • Morning coffee (hello, bulletproof weed brew!)

  • Skin salves or massage oils

Final Thoughts: Infuse with Confidence

Making cannabis-infused coconut oil at home doesn’t have to be a gamble. With the right tools, and a basic understanding of decarboxylation, you can make potent, clean, and customizable edibles — all from the comfort of your kitchen.

It’s healthier, it’s controllable, and it’s downright delicious.

“Cooking is an act of love… especially when cannabis is involved,” says chef Laurie Wolf. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

So, what are you waiting for? Go get infused.
