MUST HAVES

Let’s tackle a hot question many of us in the cannabis cooking community have asked at least once:

Can you decarb in an air fryer?

Spoiler: technically yes, but would I recommend it for your precious flower? Not unless you enjoy inconsistent results and wasting terpenes. Let’s break it down like a THC molecule at 240°F.

What Does It Mean to “Decarb” Cannabis?

If you’re new to the game, decarboxylation (aka decarb) is the process of heating cannabis to activate its psychoactive and therapeutic compounds. In raw form, cannabis contains THCA and CBDA, the acidic forms of THC and CBD. They won’t get you high or relieve pain unless they go through heat-induced decarboxylation.

The process releases a carboxyl group (a CO₂ molecule) from the cannabinoids. You need this reaction to convert THCA → THC and CBDA → CBD, which our bodies can actually absorb.

Without decarb? You’re just sprinkling salad with some very expensive kale.

Can You Decarb in an Air Fryer?

Technically? Yes.

Scientifically? No thanks.

As someone who loves good weed and better edibles? Absolutely not.

Why It’s Tempting:

  • Air fryers get hot fast and circulate air for even crispiness.

  • You might already be using it for recipes like crispy rice or even dried herbs.

  • It’s just sitting there on your counter saying “Try me.”

But Here's the Science:

  • Inconsistent temperature: Air fryers tend to fluctuate, especially if not preheated properly or overloaded. THC activation needs a steady ~240°F (115°C) for 30–40 minutes.

  • Burned flower risk: The intense air circulation can scorch your buds and burn off valuable cannabinoids and terpenes. Burnt cannabis = bitter taste and lower potency.

  • Smell: You thought your oven stinks when decarbing? The air fryer blows the scent everywhere. Not ideal if you’re trying to be discreet.

Renowned cannabis chef and educator Jeff the 420 Chef has spoken about precision in decarbing:

“Cannabis is like a soufflé—temperature, timing, and patience are everything.”

We agree. That’s why we made the ECRU Decarboxylator: a one-button decarb and infuse machine that does all the science for you.

Pro Tip:

Use butter, coconut oil, olive oil, or honey to infuse your decarbed flower. Avoid alcohol-based infusions with ECRU (alcohol has a low boiling point and poses safety risks).

Cannabis-Infused Crispy Rice Salad Recipe

This salad is textural joy on a plate: crunchy rice, snappy shrimp, cooling cucumber, and bright herbs. Add a THC or CBD boost by infusing the rice or shrimp oil using the ECRU decarboxylator.

Infusion Options:

  • Infuse the toasted sesame oil used in rice frying.

  • Infuse lime-fish sauce dressing with cannabis glycerin tincture.

  • Infuse shrimp marinade oil for a mellow edible.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb peeled shrimp

  • ½ tsp kosher salt

  • ¼ tsp baking soda

  • 2 tsp sugar, divided

  • 2 cups day-old jasmine rice, chilled

  • 4 tbsp cannabis-infused toasted sesame oil, divided

  • 3 tbsp fish sauce

  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice

  • 1 tbsp warm water

  • 1 cup thin red onion slices

  • 1 cup mung bean sprouts

  • ⅓ cup chopped Thai basil, dill, mint

  • 2 tbsp Fresno chile, thinly sliced

  • 1 English cucumber, halved and sliced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • ¼ cup chopped roasted peanuts

Directions

  1. Prep shrimp: Toss shrimp with salt, baking soda, and 1 tsp sugar. Chill uncovered.

  2. Crisp the rice:

    • Mix rice with 2 tbsp infused sesame oil.

    • Air fry in two batches at 400°F: 8 min undisturbed, then 2 min stirred.

    • Set aside and wipe bowl clean.

  3. Make dressing:

    • In same bowl, mix fish sauce, lime juice, warm water, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tsp sugar.

  4. Cook shrimp:

    • Pat dry and toss with remaining 1 tbsp infused oil.

    • Air fry for 4 minutes until opaque.

  5. Toss salad:

    • Combine crispy rice, shrimp, cucumber, onion, sprouts, herbs, garlic, and chile in the dressing bowl.

    • Top with peanuts and more herbs.

  6. Serve:

    • Enjoy immediately while the rice is crisp and the herbs are fresh.

Dosage Tips for the Infusion

Each tablespoon of cannabis-infused oil can have 15–30mg THC depending on the strength of your flower and infusion time. Start small!

For this salad, we recommend:

  • Use 2 tbsp of infused oil split between the rice and shrimp.

  • At ~20mg per tbsp, that’s 10mg THC per serving (for 4 servings).

Always label your edibles, especially when sharing. Nothing ruins dinner like a surprise 50mg hit.

Final Thoughts

If you're someone who loves playing with flavor and texture in the kitchen, there’s no better companion than properly infused cannabis oils. Just remember: start low, go slow, and treat your flower with the respect it deserves.
